Client & context

A US company serving certified professionals - people who must complete continuing professional education (CPE) every year to keep their certification current - wanted to move its courses onto the phone.

The challenge

CPE credit only counts if the learning actually happened. The app therefore had to prove that a user watched the whole video and passed an assessment, and then issue a certificate the user can submit. All of this had to work on the go, in short sessions.

What we built

• Course library - educational videos downloaded from the server.
• No skipping - videos are set up so fast-forwarding and skipping are not allowed, which protects the integrity of the credit.
• Follow-up quiz after each video.
• PDF certificate - once the pass score is reached, the app generates a completion certificate with the user's name, the course name and the date.

Process & timeline

We agreed the rules for completion and certification with the client first, because they drive everything else, then built and tested the video, quiz and certificate flow end to end. Delivery took 10 weeks.

Results

Pocket CPE brings mobile continuing education to professionals across the United States.

Professionals could complete their required credits in short sessions on the phone, with a certificate ready to submit as soon as they passed.

At our current rates, a build of this scope would cost about £18–35k — an estimate from the feature list, not the original invoice.

If we built it today

Today we would add offline downloads, progress sync across phone and web, and an admin portal for course authors, keeping the no-skip and certificate rules that make the credit valid. A first release of a product like this typically takes 6–8 weeks; our rates start from £49/hour per developer, and £65–£70/hour for a full team with QA and product ownership.
